Designed for outdoor activities alone, the app can be used on your phone directly or it can be synced with a supported activity tracker, such as a smartwatch or a bike computer.

However, if you want to keep records of your activity, it is necessary to subscribe to a Premium Plan which is quite expensive, to be honest.

In my opinion, the combo Garmin smartwatch ? Garmin Connect is ideal for all athletes, not only cyclists. When it comes to cycling, this app allows you to set monthly goals and helps you achieve them by joining team challenges or by determining you to beat other cyclists? best time.

Apart from this, the app also helps you get ready for competitions and acts as a sort of motivator in achieving your goals. Despite its limitation, Garmin Connect gives you the best hardware device ? app experience and is ideal for reaching your training goals.

1. A Bricklayer Won The First Edition of Giro d?Italia

Nicknamed ?Corsa Rosa? in its original language, Giro d?Italia inaugurated its first edition in 1909. The race was invented by the Italian newspaper Gazzetta Dello Sport and the first pink jersey was won by Luigi Ganna, a Lombard bricklayer.

In the same year, Ganna also won the Milan-Sanremo race, despite not being a professional cyclist.

Since 1909, Giro d?Italia is organized every year and it was only interrupted during the two world wars, specifically from 1915 to 1918 and from 1941 to 1945.

2. Giro d?Italia?s First Stage Debuted In The Night

The inaugural stage of Giro d?Italia?s history, a trait from Milan to Bologna raced on May 13 1909 started in Loreto Square in Milan at 2.35am. 3. Merckx Is The Pinkest Rider

Eddy Merckx is a Belgian cyclist famous for his performances in the Tour de France and Giro d?Italia but not only. Known under the nickname of ?the cannibal?, Merckx holds the absolute record in wearing the pink jersey for 78 days in a row. Merckx is seconded by Alfredo Binda, who wore the pink jersey for 59 consecutive days and by Francesco Moser with 57 days.

Merckx, together with Binda and Fausto Coppi are the most successful riders of Giro d?Italia, and each of them won five races. Yet, Merckx and Binda are the only racers who registered three consecutive victories (between 1927 and 1929 Binda and between 1972 and 1974 Merckx).

4. First Stage Outside The Italian Borders: 13 Times

2018 marked the thirteenth time when Giro d?Italia started outside the Italian borders. The first time this happened was in 1965 when the race started in San Marino. In the following year, the organizers chose Monaco as a starting point, while in 1973 the race started in Verviers, Belgium.

The other cities outside Italy that hosted the first stage of the race were the Vatican City in 1974, Athens in 1966, Nice in 1998, Groningen in 2002, Seraing in 2006, Amsterdam in 2010, Herning in 2012, Belfast in 2014, Apeldoorn in 2016, and Jerusalem in 2020.

10. Five Foreigners At The First Start

The first race held in 1909 counted 127 cyclists but only five of them were foreigners. And none of them ended the race, retiring for various reasons during the stages. Four foreign attendees were from France, while the fifth was Austrian.

11. Giro d?Italia Counted Only 54 Racers In 1912

All competitions have a trophy but when it comes to Giro d?Italia, the trophy is a complete innovation. Awarded along with the pink jersey to the winner of the race, the trophy is called in its original language ?Il Trofeo Senza Fine?, which roughly translates to the Endless Trophy.

The peculiarity stands in the fact that the trophy, shaped like a spiral that rises upwards, contains the names of all winners of the previous editions engraved on the spiral. This stretches the spiral each year, as a new name has to be engraved on it.

What Is Cyclocross?

Cyclocross is a discipline born and developed in Europe in the early 1900s. It emerged as a system to help road racers to stay fit during fall and winter, but in a short time, it became an independent specialty with its own competition calendar.

The first international cyclocross race dates back to 1920 and since then, the discipline attracted hundreds of athletes and countless followers mainly in Switzerland, Italy, and Belgium.

In the last decades, CX has gained a lot of popularity in the US too and today, this discipline is practiced by enthusiasts but also by many road racers and off-road pros who want to keep fit in the low activity seasons.

In broad terms, cyclocross involves riding along circuit trails with a variable distance that ranges from two to four or five kilometers (roughly 1.25 to 2.50 miles) on a mixture of paved and off-road surfaces. Elite competitions last for about an hour but what makes CX unique is the fact that the routes contain obstacles that force riders to get off the bike and run or walk while carrying their vehicles on their shoulders. Neither a road bike nor a mountain bike is suitable for this sport. Essentially, a CX bike is more similar to a road bike than to an MTB but some changes on the frame make it suitable to ride on dirt tracks. Like all performing road bikes, a CX bike is usually equipped with drop bar handlebars and traditional road bike wheels.

However, like a mountain bike, a CX bike has disc brakes for a better braking power on slippery surfaces. Despite the traditional road bike wheels, a CX bike is usually equipped with rugged tires that provide a better grip on mud.

The bottom bracket is positioned at a higher level than the bracket of a road bike while the rear tube and front fork are wider, to prevent the mud from blocking the wheels. The bike is also equipped with quick-release mountain bike pedals that allow cyclists to react instantly if the balance is lost.

Elite competitions last either for one hour or one hour and ten minutes.

The length of the circuit is not fixed and is dependent on the landscape while the duration is determined by the jury based on the time needed to complete the first two laps and considering the level of expertise of the participants.

The diversity of the circuit that includes asphalted stretched interrupted by off-road sections that go through grass, mud, and sand, the existence of short steep climbs and many bends are the distinctive features of CX.

On some stretches, the rider may have to jump off the bike and carry the vehicle on the shoulders or in their hands.

The various sections of the route are short and each stage lasts for only a few seconds. For example, short and steep climbs replace long slopes. Straight sections are interrupted by tight bends. The asphalted road is interrupted by grass or dirt trails, and so on.

This forces the competitors to continuously change speed and effort. And the fun part is that the obstacles can be placed anywhere on the route.

The thickness of the tires is expressed in TPI; the lower the number the thicker the casing. Most road bike tires have a TPI of over 100, which means they contain very fine threads that ensure the suppleness and low rolling resistance of the tire.

The thread is the outer part of the tire and its main goal is to maximize aerodynamics. The thread is characterized by patterns, which vary from smooth to slick; most road bike tires have smooth threads which are made of a compound containing rubber or butyl and additives such as Kevlar, silicone, or carbon black.

Present on the clinches tires, the beads are two steel or Kevlar cables folded inside the edges of the casing. Their purpose is to minimize the elasticity of the tire, keeping it in place on the rim. The first thing to decide when choosing road bike tires is which model is the best for you. The three main types are described above but don?t just assume a tubular tire is your best bet. Depending on your level of performance, riding style and purpose, tubular may or may not be the best.

For an entry-level athlete, tubeless tires could be the most appropriate. These tires are resistant to punctures but affordable, easier to replace, and easier to repair.

Tubular tires are also less comfortable. Their purpose is that of reducing rolling resistance and this often means less tire width and less grip. If you?re mainly riding for leisure or commuting, you?re not going to enjoy comfortable rides with tubular tires.

Now it?s time to play detective and identify the puncture. The easiest way to do this is by inflating the tube half way and submerge it in water. The bubbles will show you exactly where the leak is. If there is no water source near you, just inflate the inner tube all the way then keep it close to you to feel where the leak happens.

If the puncture is small, this could take a while; alternatively, you can just replace the punctured tube with a spare one and identify the leak later on.

Step 4 ? Repair The Puncture

If you had the patience to identify the puncture, circle it with a white marker then proceed to fix it. Deflate the tube again and use the patch kit following the manufacturer?s instructions to fix the tube. Wait for the indicated time then place the inner tube back into the tire.

Step 5 ? Mount The Tire And Wheel
